Candidate skills shortage set to continue into 2017

Following a recent JobsOutlook survey conducted by the Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC), just under half of UK employers feel that the candidate skills shortage is set to continue into 2017.

48 percent of employers who took part in the survey believe that the challenges they faced in attracting and engaging quality candidates to their vacancies last year will yet again cause significant difficulties, especially when it comes to filling permanent roles.

Over the last six months, employers in a variety of industry sectors have consistently stated that they’ve faced a candidate skills shortage when looking to employ new staff – especially in the engineering and technical roles arena.

Other areas where employers are predicting a candidate skills shortage include construction and health and social care.

32 percent of organisations have reported that they currently have no spare workforce capacity, which in turn leads to increased pressure on existing employee resources and a lack of business growth.

Therefore, the pressure to take on new candidates in the first quarter of 2017 is building with almost a quarter of all UK employers attempting to engage more permanent staff.

Despite concerns regarding our overall economic health following the decision for the UK to exit the EU last year, the labour market remains strong and employers have cited that their business confidence is steadily improving.

Results from the survey show that 30 per cent feel that economic conditions are improving, up from 27 per cent in the previous rolling quarter with 38 per cent expect hiring and investment to improve, up from 33 per cent who said the same last month.

The latest JobsOutlook survey was conducted on a national scale, therefore there are variations to these trends across regional locations.
