Your dream job has just come on the market, and your absolutely desperate to get your foot in the door and show the employer that you’re the perfect fit for the role – despite not having much experience.
But what would you do if you made it to the point where the employer requested references? As you’ve perhaps not had much (if any) experience in this area then you might start to wonder if it’s worth you submitting an application in the first place as you’ll be unable to provide relevant referees.
Don’t worry, there are people you can turn to in the event that you don’t currently have any experience. Here’s our recommendations for the best 3 referees to use if you don’t have much experience.
Lecturers / Teachers
Lecturers or teachers that know you well can be an excellent alternative for a reference if you don’t have any relevant work experience. They’ll be able to give the employer a valuable insight into your character and ability to produce work to strict deadlines.
Just don’t forget to make contact beforehand as employees in the education sector have dozens of students each term, so it’s a good idea to jog their memory and ask permission before you offer them as a referee.
Although these previous employers might be from a completely different sector and you held a role that doesn’t directly relate to the position your applying for, it doesn’t mean that the information they would be able to provide in regards to your work ethic, attitude, how well you worked with others and timekeeping or attendance is any less relevant.
Just make sure you give them a call to explain your applying for a new position so they know what the employer is looking for when they provide a reference.
Voluntary group leaders
If you’ve ever undertaken any kind of voluntary work, then group or organisation leaders can make fantastic referees. If you’re still in touch, it’s well worth making contact to tell them what you’ve been up to since you last spoke and fill them in on your goals and aspirations for the future.
